Un proyecto de foto documental espía detrás de los escenarios para encontrar el lado más humano de los artistas, en su íntima relación con el espacio.

Luces y cámaras esperan en el escenario. Por detrás, una cámara espía enfoca sólo algunas cosas de todo lo que sucede -maquillaje, listas, ropa en el suelo, gente que corre- y las registra. Esas capturas más tarde se convierten en Understage.
Este proyecto de fotografía documental busca mostrar la relación entre un artista y su espacio en el momento íntimo antes de subir al escenario. Understage baja del pedestal a las estrellas -o a las que casi lo son- al publicar su lado más sencillo y humano. Edgar Dávila Soto, motivado por la curiosidad, captura la espontaneidad, la libertad, la emoción, los nervios y el flujo de energía con una intención más allá de la música: el llevar un registro social.
Edgar empezó a producir este contenido desde 2015, con la banda Bueyes de Madera y pronto despegó para trabajar con otras bandas locales. Swing Original Monks, Alkaloides, Les Petit Bâtards, All Toys, Lolabúm, Mateo Kingman, Esteman y Legs están en la lista. La idea inicial del proyecto fue documentar la escena emergente ecuatoriana, y publicar estas historias dos veces al mes.

Las imágenes de Understage rompen con el tecnicismo fotográfico para darle mayor importancia la carga expresiva y emocional del momento con el lugar. Estas series producidas en blanco y negro tienen una estética que las unifica, en donde los movimientos, los desenfoques, la luz natural limitada y el grano fotográfico pasan a ser parte de la experiencia y del registro del espacio.
La selección de estas imágenes pone prioridad al contenido sentimental y pasional que evoca cada fotografía, mientras deja un tanto de lado las reglas de belleza establecidas.

El estudio del espacio y su relación con los humanos dentro de una sociedad no son un tema nuevo para Edgar. Él, aparte de ser un melómano y fotógrafo, es antropólogo con años de experiencia en fotografía arquitectónica. Understage nace como una oportunidad de exploración del fenómeno social que provoca la música en la actualidad. Además de una oportunidad de estudio de cómo el espacio influye en el comportamiento individual y colectivo de las personas.

Understage es un proyecto versátil de formato que se desliga de cualquier medio de difusión específico. Por el momento se publica a través del portal Lifestyle Kiki, pero tiene el objetivo de convertirse en un editorial exclusivo para este contenido. Parte de las nuevas metas del proyecto son no limitarse a la música, sino también, explorar el mundo tras los bastidores del teatro. Pero mientras haya música, por qué no ir planeando hacer ya ediciones del Understage con personajes que van desde Nicola Cruz, la Mala Rodríguez o los chicos de Alabama Shakes. Incluso (¿porqué no?) hacer una publicación exclusiva de «Séptimo Día» del Cirque du Soleil (inspirado en la historia de Soda Stéreo) ¿Se imaginan cómo sería eso?
