El mathcore es un género complejo y multifacético. Sus orígenes son algo discutibles pero ya en 1995 grupos como Rorschach, Deadguy y Starkweather tocaban esta música. A finales del siglo XX, Converge, Botch, Cave In y Coalesce expandieron el estilo aunque todavía en un marco limitado. El inicio del siglo XXI sería la época de mayor apogeo del mathcore y el momento en que se comienza a utilizar el término.
